What a well written essay! As someone from Indiana, I know exactly where you’re coming from with the midwestern culture. As much as I love to hate the Midwest and wiggled to escape from its “close mindedness” my whole life, there is something to be said about the ease of it all. Nobody is doing the most to outcompete each other, no one is necessarily trying to get to the top, everyone tends to find satisfaction in a simple, achievable life. And there is not that resentment towards housing or prices, people are much more able to live comfortably. I think that’s really the key, is it’s comfortable. And there’s space for everyone and space to breathe. And not mention that Midwest hospitality and humility is unmatched , still out of anywhere I go!

Great essay. I’ve traveled a lot lately, and the more I see of the U.S., the more I appreciate what a miracle it is that such environmentally and culturally disparate populations largely coexist in peace and prosperity. It’s not perfect, but it’s easy to take it for granted if you live your whole life in a regional silo.

As a refugee of the coastal elite, here’s hoping the Midwest has a greater voice in setting the political and cultural agenda for the next 10-20 years.
