GDP isn't everything, but it's pretty important.

I find those on the Right who fetishize the "simple life" utterly clueless. However, too many people on the Left forget that "perfection is impossible to achieve". Both seem willing to throw basic human flourishing under the bus to advance their own ideology.

Another thing that I find frustrating is romanticizing manual labor. A physics professor I knew, who used to work as a construction worker for many years before getting his PhD, told me: he did so because he’s now partially deaf and has severe chronic pain from injuries and stress from construction work. He’s much happier with white collar teaching job.
